Color Changing Leaves
Materials:
- 2‐3 fresh leaves, each from different trees
- 6 small glass jars
- Aluminum foil
- Scotch tape
- Rubbing alcohol
- Cotton paper (cotton filter paper)
- Water
- Pan
- Plastic spoon
- Scissors
- Clock
- Felt tip pen
Instructions:
1. Take your leaves and begin tearing them into small pieces. Place one piece into each jar, remembering which tree it came from. You can label these with your felt tip pen.
2. Pour rubbing alcohol onto each of the leaves, enough so that they are submerged. Using your spoon, begin grinding or tearing up the leaf inside the alcohol. Do this for all six jars.
3. Cover the jars with aluminum foil.
4. Take your pan and put hot water in it. You will need about an inch of water, or just enough so that the jars are about halfway in the water.
5. When you place the jars in the water, move or gently spin them in a clockwise position around three times while still inside the water. Do this for all the jars. Continue to do this every five minutes for half an hour. The alcohol should begin to change colors.
