Getting Them Interested: Life Science
Your child's natural curiosity about the world is a great asset that you will have when trying to get them interested in science. You need to develop this curiosity so that they stay interested in science. One way to do so is to focus on a particular branch of science that your child can study and continuously ask questions on. Because science is such a complex topic, just one branch of science can be enough to dazzle your child for a long time.
Getting your child interested in life science can be one of the easiest ways to get them interested in the science subject in general. Life science is an easy branch to start studying. You just have to show your child how fascinating life is. Do this by carrying out a project with your child. Try raising a butterfly or several butterflies. You can get the details on how to raise butterflies from your animal or pet store.
Usually, raising butterflies involves keeping butterfly caterpillars in relatively large boxes that have no bottom so that a plant may grow inside or through the box (remember to keep the box in a place where sunlight can filter through. The sunlight comes through because the sides of the box are replaced with mesh. Some animal stores have a special treatment they sell that can be put on the mesh so that the environment is perfect for the caterpillars. The plant's leaves are used for food and as shelter for your caterpillars.
Eventually, the caterpillars will turn into chrysalises and after they've completed metamorphosis, they will turn into butterflies. At this point, you can open the top of the box so that your butterflies are free to fly out and carry on the rest of their lives. Also, butterflies will not survive in captivity.
Through this project, you second grader will learn about food and growth of animals. It also supports what they are learning in school about animal life cycles. A hands‐on experience like this will help your child fully understand what their teachers are talking about, and it will definitely get them interested in science, particularly life sciences.
