Getting Them Interested
Children can find science very daunting. It's part of your job as a parent to get them interested in the subject. Begin showing them how science is involved in everything that they do. Even simple activities have science behind them so when you can, you should mention this to your child. Getting them to see how science is present everywhere will get them interested in the subject. Young children are curious and they like knowing the answers to their questions. And if they feel that science can provide them with a lot of answers, they will definitely be interested.
Try doing a science activity with your child every day and telling them about the science behind it. You can actually incorporate many different subjects and other concepts you would like your children to learn as you do this. For example, involving your child in the kitchen can help you teach them about measurements. This will improve both their science and their math skills. Plus you can teach them about healthy foods and healthy eating at the same time.
If you let your child stay on while you cook, you can talk about heat and the energy produced from fire in order to cook food. This can be a little advanced for a first grader, but heat energy can help you review your child on the sun, and in turn the solar system. Talking about these science concepts with your child as part of everyday conversation will help keep them interested in science, and it will also make them feel like science is something that is easy and doable because it's done every day.
