Make Your Own Thermometer
Materials:
- 1 clear plastic water bottle
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Water
- 1 clear drinking straw
- Modeling Clay
- Food Coloring
Instructions:
1. Fill 1/8 of your plastic bottle with water. (If you know the bottle's capacity, ex. 16oz, this will be easier to do.)
2. Fill another 1/8 of the plastic bottle with rubbing alcohol. You will now have a bottle that is ¼ full of clear liquid. Add some food coloring (just a few drops of your color of choice) into the mixture and let it tint the liquid. Quickly cap the bottle so none of the rubbing alcohol escapes.
3. Prepare the modeling clay by molding it into a round but flat shape, like a thick coin.
4. Stick your clear straw through the middle of the modeling clay, making sure you remove the clay at the end of the straw that went through the clay. We need the straw to be free on both ends. The clay should be on one side of the straw, about an inch from one end of the straw, and several inches from the other end.
5. Make sure your clay is sealed around the straw tightly.
6. Uncap the bottle and quickly place the straw and clay on top of the bottle. The straw should enter the bottle, going down and halfway through the liquid. Don't let the straw hit the bottom of the bottle.
7. Using your modeling clay on the other end of the straw to seal the bottle and straw in place.
