Milk into Glue
Materials:
- 2 cups of milk
- 30mL of vinegar
- 1 pan
- Stove
- Filter Paper
- 1 Jar
- Parchment Paper
- Baking Soda
- Barbecue sticks
- Popsicle sticks
Instructions:
1. Pour 2 cups of milk and 30 mL of vinegar onto your pan. Mix the two liquids in using a barbecue stick or a long Popsicle stick. (*Note: Never use kitchen utensils in case you never get the glue off it.)
2. Lightly heat the solution. You should notice that parts of the milk are beginning to curd.
3. After you see that the solution is slightly bubbling, turn off the heat. Prepare a jar by putting some filter paper over it.
4. Mix the mixture well one more time then pour it onto the filter paper. The liquid should flow down to the jar while the curds should stay on top of the paper. (*Note: You may have to use several pieces filter paper and make sure it is steady over the jar so when the curds fall on it, the paper doesn't fall into the jar.)
5. Transfer the curds from the filter paper to parchment paper and allow to dry for about half an hour.
6. Begin adding baking soda (about 1/3 teaspoon at a time) and mix it in with the Popsicle stick. You will notice that the solid curds are bubbling slightly. Why?
7. Your glue is ready to use! Try using it to stick several things together. (*Note: Once the glue is drier, it looks like plastic.)
Vinegar has the ability to separate the solid parts of the milk. These solids are mostly fats and whey. When the solids are added to baking soda, the baking soda gives it a very sticky texture, turning it into decent glue. You notice bubbles on the solids when you add baking soda because the leftover vinegar is reacting to the baking soda being added. This is a chemical reaction; the composition of the substance is changing.
