More Lessons on Fifth Grade Science (Science and Your Fifth Grader continued)

After focusing on the universe, students turn their focus to the earth, understanding the theory of plate tectonics. Learning about Pangea and what it has become at present is pretty fun for children because the earth and its countries are seen as a jigsaw puzzle. The current situation of plate tectonics and further movement is also discussed. Earth science ends with a discussion of the atmosphere, the climate, and the weather. The water cycle is reviewed and the effects of global warming and climate change are also learned.

Understanding the different climates and the past and present weather systems around the world is often talked about in order to give children a better understanding of the weather and how global warming has been affecting it.

Wrapping up the fifth grade lessons is physical science. Beginning with the chemical and physical changes of matter, boiling and freezing as concepts are defined and discussed. The transformation of energy is also studied because chemical changes often involve energy. Water is studied as a form of matter, particularly the concepts of condensation and evaporation. This often leads to learning about latent heat, a topic that is introduced in the fifth grade and expounded upon in middle school.

Kinetic and potential energy as well as a review of thermal energy and thermal transfer are big topics in fifth grade science because these lead to the introduction, definition, and study of Newton's laws of motion. From studying Newton's laws, the study of gravity and basic word problems for solving gravitational pull will follow. Fifth grade science teachers make sure your child knows how to answer a word problem as well as know how to convert all basic measurements because physical science in middle school involves more computation than ever before.
