Paper Towel Plants

Materials:

  • Brown Paper Towels
  • Mung Beans
  • Water
  • Zip Lock Bags

Instructions:

1. Take about three paper towels. Stack them on top of each other. Moisten them with some water.

2. Fold the towels over once and place three or four mung beans onto the towel then fold the towels over once more.

3. Place the moistened towels into the zip lock bag and seal the bag making sure some air is trapped in the bag.

4. Put the bag in a warm place and check on the seeds every three days. If mold develops on the paper towels, replace them. Just fold the same seeds into the newly moistened towels.

5. Your seeds should sprout within two weeks. Once they've sprouted, you can transfer the seeds into a pot with soil where they can continue growing.

Your children can learn a lot from this simple activity. It teaches them that seeds need a moist and warm environment in order to start their life cycle. This process of absorbing water is called germination.
