Science Questions in the Fourth Grade

Your fourth grader is sure to have science questions to ask you. Unlike the earlier year levels where you could give simple answers, though, this year you may need to get out a pencil and paper in order to answer some of the fourth grade science questions. This is because some science questions will require you to compute for measurements or for a certain values like speed or distance. This usually happens when your child's science topic is physical science, but it can happen during life science as well. The r/K selection theory is often coupled with the Punnet square which is a method of determining possible genetic outcomes or inheritance of genetic traits.

Don't worry if you begin hearing terms you've never heard of or thought you'd never hear again. Helping your child through their fourth grade science class will not be difficult for you, and in fact, it could be a chance for you to learn something new! Keep yourself informed by reading your child's science book. Many times, you can read the book together so you can learn together. Have your child explain concepts to you, and if they have questions, guide them towards the answer by making them review certain concepts.

Remember to use the Internet as a helpful tool. Some science books can be difficult to understand and sometimes a science website has found a simpler way to explain things by giving simple examples. Try to read and understand as many examples as possible so that your child will fully grasp the concept. Some examples even come in video form so your child can watch the video of the demonstration and understand exactly what the book is trying to say. Also, make your child give examples of their own. Being able to provide their own examples shows full understanding of the topic.

Finally, and if you can, try to be ahead by one or two concepts of your child’s lessons so that you can really help them along. Ask your child's teacher for the lesson plan of the year, and use this as a guide. Knowing exactly what your child is about to study can help you prepare them for their class. For example, if you know that they will be discussing light and its properties, maybe you can show your child the classic 'make paper burn through a magnifying glass and the sun' experiment. When your child goes to school on Monday and the teacher begins discussing, they will already know something about it. Your child won't see the topic as something completely new or difficult because they've already done something related to the lesson at home!
