Science with Food: Make Your Own Butter
Materials
- ½ Liter Heavy Whipping Cream
- 1 glass jar with an airtight lid
Instructions:
1. Fill 1/3 of the jar with cream.
2. Tell your child to shake the jar or continuously turn it upside down for about fifteen minutes.
3. The butter will separate from the water and float on top. The clumps that you see is butter that is ready to eat.
Cream is a good example of a suspension. The butter molecules and water molecules mix together to make cream. However, shaking the jar will cause the butter molecules to stick together and end up floating in the water instead of mixed into it. This activity is a good example of how you can separate a mixture without chemical means.
