Science with Food: Separating Fats

Materials:

  • 2 cups full cream milk
  • 3 colors of food coloring
  • Liquid soap
  • Pyrex pan

Instructions:

1. Pour the full cream milk into the Pyrex pan.

2. Put in three colors of food coloring in various sections of the pan. Notice that the food coloring stays in place and doesn't mix into the milk.

3. Begin pouring the liquid soap into the milk. You will notice that as the soap spreads, the food coloring begins to move.

The food coloring did not move the first time you put it in because food coloring is made out of water, and this will hold still in milk. However, when you put in the soap, the fat molecules in the milk begin sticking to the soap causing movement in the milk and making the colors move. Try creating bubbles in the milk by stirring it up. You will notice that with enough soap, you will get clumps of milk. This is the fat found in the liquid.
