Second Grade Questions: Inductive Reasoning

As your child learns more and more about science and how it affects their world, they will find more questions to ask you. Just like before, it is important that you answer your child as honestly as you can and tell the truth if you don't know the answer. Never make up an answer. Remember that if you don't know the answer, tell your child that you will help them find the answer, and really try to find the answer side by side with your child. This will show them that you are taking their science questions seriously and that you also want to know the answer. Seeing this in you will help your child take their science class more seriously, as well as want to learn more.

You can expect that your second grade child will be asking you questions related to what they're learning. Don't be surprised if they ask you where babies come from since part of the life science discussion in the second grade talks about animal life cycles (early stages included.)Usually, a school will inform parents whether or not they will be telling children that human babies come from their mother's womb and at what grade level they will be teaching the child this. If it is being discussed, make sure your answer coincides with what your child is learning in science class. If it isn't, give your child an honest answer (no need to go into the details), just don't lie and say the stork brought them over.

Because of what they will be learning in physical and earth science, your child will become very curious about the earth and how things work in it. As a parent who wants to encourage their child towards science, you should encourage this curiosity. Whenever your child asks you a question about the earth, make sure you answer it. They may ask you what kind of energy is used to power your homes, if you've ever been up a mountain, or if you know how magnets work.

Given the topics that will be discussed with your child in the second grade and the type of questions your child is likely to ask, the second grade is a good time for you to introduce your child to the concept of inductive reasoning. You don't have to tell them right off the bat that what they are doing is inductive reasoning, but honing this type of reasoning or thinking in your child will really benefit them in science class both in the second grade and in the future.

Inductive reasoning is a type of reasoning in which a specific point or series of similar points are focused on, and from these facts, a generalization is made. Many times, you can use this kind of reasoning to help your child answer their own science questions. This kind of reasoning is easy for your child to do and understand in the second grade.
