What Earth is Made Of
Our earth is made up of many different things. Three of those things are soil, mud, and sand. The earth science projects we do in school help us understand what soil, mud, and sand are like. Let's read about each of them, and learn about what they can do.
Soil
Soil is also known as earth, and that's where our planet gets its name! Soil can be different depending where you are on earth. It can have different colors, textures, and consistency depending on where you find it. For the most part, soil is what plants and flowers use to grow. The earth science project listed under this section, shows us how soil can be turned into a fertilizer, which can help our plants and flowers grow strong.
Mud
When we mix soil with water, we make mud. Mud is the other earth material that we can see. Mud can be used to create things because it gets hard when it dries up. Some countries have mud buildings or houses. For a quick earth science project, make a small bed of mud at the bottom of a wooden box. Press your foot down on the mud so that your shoe leaves behind a hole in the shape of your show. Let the box and the mud dry in the sun. Once it is dry, you will see that the mud hardened and kept the shape of your shoe!
Sand
When rocks break into pieces, some of the pieces that break off are very very tiny, and sand is created. Sand is tiny bits of rock that has been crushed for many different reasons, and at different points in time. If you visit a beach, you can run your fingers and toes through the sand. All of that is lots of crushed rocks! If you can't go to a beach, ask you parent to take you to some garden shops. They may have piles of sand that you can look at and touch. Sand feels different in different places. For an earth science project, try collecting sand from different places and different beaches. You will see that sand also has different colors!
