Changing Weather!
The weather is the current or everyday temperature and precipitation levels of your environment. Meteorologists, or scientists that study the super fun science of weather, study the changes in the atmosphere. They are the ones that give weather forecasts, which are usually a weather prediction for the next three or five days. Based on weather trends, past data, and the current data they are gathering, they are able to make predictions about what the weather will probably be like. It isn't always perfect though, as many times the weather seems to change its mind, and do the opposite of the prediction!
The weather changes because climate can change, and so can precipitation. You can have a very hot summer day that is bright and sunny, and all of a sudden have it rain in the afternoon of the same day. This could be because during the morning, the heat vaporized a lot of water from the ground or surrounding area causing it to be very hot and dry. Once all the water vapor is up in the air, the clouds become heavy, and turn from cumulus into nimbus. When the nimbus clouds lie low in the sky, and become dark, the rain comes down to cool the environment. This is what happens in the water cycle, and its also one way that the weather can balance the environment.
Depending on where you live, you can probably more or less predict what kind of weather you will have during different times of year. Though weather is unpredictable, it does follow some trends because of the position of the earth in its orbit around the sun. Fascinating, right!? Weather really is a super fun science!
Many things rely on the super fun science of weather. Farmers rely on weather trends in order to know when to plant their crops, or when not to water, or when to harvest. Airplanes and airports rely on weather conditions to know whether or not they can or should fly. We rely on the weather to figure out if we need umbrellas or jackets, or if we can head to the beach.
The weather has the power to dictate our lives, especially if we are not prepared for what it will be like. Luckily, meteorologists are more often right than they are wrong, and we can figure out our future weather most of the time. The best thing about the super fun science of weather, though, is that we too can study and predict the weather through our very own instruments. In the projects section, you will find a project that helps you make your own weather station around your home. This will help you study the weather and its trends, and allow you to make some predictions of your own!
