The Solar System & The Parts of the Sun & the Earth
You may have heard of the solar system. It is composed of our sun, and a group of eight planets orbiting the sun, with one dwarf planet (Pluto) which orbits the sun as well. Some planets have moons or satellites that orbit the planet. Each planet is differently colored depending on the gases or elements found on that planet. Apart from these moons, there is also an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. This asteroid belt also orbits the sun.
Our solar system lies in the Milky Way Galaxy. We are one of many solar systems, or at least possible solar systems as observed via telescopes. The study of the solar system opens up many good science projects for kids. You can choose to study any of the planets, any of the moons or satellites, and you can also study the debates that go on regarding some planets and moons.
At the center of the solar system is the sun, and all planets move around it in a circular orbit, though no planet follows a perfect circle. The sun is made of hydrogen being turned into helium. The process of turning hydrogen into helium is the reason why the sun burns, giving off heat and light. AT the center of the sun is a nuclear core which is followed by the radiative or radioactive zone. Other parts of the sun include the photosphere, convective zone, sun spots, chromosphere, corona, and flare. The more you dissect the sun, the more complex you will see it is. A study of the sun and its parts is one of the good science projects for kids.
The third planet from the sun is planet Earth, our planet. The earth is the only known planet in our solar system that sustains life. The earth rotates on its own axis every twenty-four hours, giving us day and night. It orbits the sun in an elliptical orbit, and depending on its position in its orbit, the seasons occur. Our earth also has parts, the way the sun has parts. Earth has layers, these layers are: the inner core, the outer core, the mantle, the upper mantle, and the crust. We live above the crust.. The other areas of the earth are too hot for us to survive in.
Like the sun, the earth is radioactive at the core. A study of the earth and its layers is one of the good science projects for kids. The earth's layers provide many clues as to how long our planet can sustain life, and it also teaches us about the infinite possibilities we have for energy and conservation on earth! In the projects section, you will find the first of the solar system projects. This first project will make sure you know the parts of the sun and the earth, as well as the basics of our solar system.
