Creating a Flower Chart

This is one of the many plant science fair projects, and you can actually do this project all by yourself!

You will need the following materials:

  • 1 large illustration board

  • coloring pens

  • flowers

  • glue

Instructions:

  1. Refer to the “Parts of a Flower” article on the website. Study the parts of the flower, and make sure you understand them.

  2. Using your coloring pens, create a chart on the illustration board, making about five or seven rows and eleven columns.

  3. On top of each column, beginning with the second column, begin writing down the parts of the flower. On top of the first column, write the word “flower”

  4. Collect two to four of every kind of flower you can find in your neighborhood. Check for the different parts, and see how visible each of the parts are. Choose the five or six flowers with parts that are easiest to spot and easiest to take apart.

  5. The first column is where you will place the entire flower. The succeeding columns is where you will glue the various flower parts. You may need more than just one flower to properly place the flower parts, as taking these apart can be difficult. If you like, you can use tweezers and a microscope to make sure you're getting it all right.

  6. Once all the flowers and their parts are glued under the correct rows and columns, your flower chart is finished!

Concept Explanation:

This is one of the great plant science fair projects to present to class, and if you choose to do so, try picking the flowers the night before you present them. If you have time to do the gluing in the morning, pick them the morning of your presentation. This will keep your flowers fresh looking, and it will help your classmates get to know what the flower parts really look like. The plant science fair projects transforms you into a flower expert, which can become very useful in the future! You can also help flowers multiply or pollinate, since you know exactly which parts need to combine for this to happen!
