Planting Onions

You might need the help of a grown up for this student science project.

You will need the following materials:

  • 2 small pot

  • 2 onions

  • a medium sized jar jar

  • soil

  • water

Instructions:

  1. Take the jar and pour water into it. Don't fill it, just a little bit over half the jar will be okay.

  2. Take one onion and place it in the jar, with the roots in the water and the pointed side up. It should be floating. Leave the jar outside where it can get some sun.

  3. Take the other onion and place it in a zip lock bag, but don't seal it. Put the bag in the refrigerator.

  4. Give both onions a few days up to a week and a half. Remember to check on the onion in water to make sure the water hasn't evaporated. You can change the water every three or four days if you want. Which onion pushed a green stalk out first?

  5. When both onions have green stalks coming out from the pointed ends, you can now plant them in soil. Before doing so, measure the stalks. Which one is longer, the refrigerator onion or the water onion?

  6. Take the pots and fill them with soil.

  7. Dig a hole for your onion, and place it in the soil, covering it with soil but leaving room for the sprout and about ΒΌ of an inch of the onion itself to stick out.

  8. Water your onion sprouts and put the pots out in the sun.

  9. Check on your onions every few weeks to see how tall the sprouts become. Never forget to water your onions every few days, remember that they need water and sunlight to live.

  10. Measure how fast each of the sprouts are growing. Which onion was the first to produce a flower?

Concept Explanation:

Plants need water and sunlight to stay healthy, though some plants can begin growing for as long as they are in a moist environment. Caring for the onion plants teaches children what plants need to be healthy and how they grow. You will not be able to eat these onions. They will produce purple or pink flowers, and these flowers will contain onion seeds, which you can plant if you want to grow your own onions. It's a good student science project to study at home, and help you learn your concepts well.
